How to Use This Calculator
Calculate exactly how many tiles you need for any room. Enter your room dimensions, tile size, and grout gap width to get an accurate count, including a waste allowance for cuts and breakage.
- Measure your room length and width in feet.
- Note your tile size in inches (common sizes: 6", 12", 18", or 24").
- Enter the grout gap width, typically 1.5 mm to 3 mm.
- Set your waste percentage: 10% for straight layouts, 15-20% for diagonal or herringbone patterns.
- Read the total tiles needed, including waste allowance.
How the Calculation Works
The calculator divides each room dimension by the effective tile size (tile + grout gap), rounds up to whole tiles per row and column, then multiplies them. The waste percentage is added on top of that count.
Example
For a 12 ft by 10 ft bathroom with 12-inch tiles and 3 mm grout gaps: you need roughly 10 tiles across and 12 tiles lengthwise = 120 tiles. Adding 10% waste gives 132 tiles total.
Pro Tips
- Always round up — you cannot buy partial tiles.
- Use 15-20% waste for diagonal or patterned layouts instead of the standard 10%.
- Buy all tiles from the same production lot to ensure color consistency.
- Keep 2-3 extra tiles for future repairs.
