How to Use This Calculator
Calculate how much flooring material you need. Enter the room dimensions and board width to get the square footage and linear feet of boards, including waste allowance.
- Measure the room length and width in feet.
- Enter the board width in inches (common: 3.25", 5", 7").
- Set the waste percentage for cuts and fitting.
- Read the total square footage and linear feet of boards needed.
How the Calculation Works
Room area in square feet = length × width. Linear feet of boards = room area × 12 / board width. The waste percentage is applied to the linear feet total.
Example
A 15 ft by 12 ft living room with 5-inch wide boards: area is 180 sq ft. Linear feet = 180 × 12 / 5 = 432 linear feet. Adding 10% waste = 475 linear feet.
Pro Tips
- Wider boards (7"+) make rooms look larger but generate more waste from cuts.
- Add 10% waste for standard rectangular rooms, 15% for L-shaped or irregular rooms.
- Acclimate hardwood flooring in the room for 48-72 hours before installation.
- Run boards lengthwise along the longest wall for the best visual effect.
