⚠️Estimate — for straight runs only. Corners, gates, and terrain may require additional materials.
How to Use This Calculator
Calculate how many panels, posts, and rails you need for a fence. Enter the total fence length and panel width to get an accurate materials list.
- Measure the total fence length in feet.
- Enter the panel width (standard: 6 ft or 8 ft).
- The calculator determines the number of panels needed.
- Posts are calculated as panels + 1 (one post per panel plus one at the end).
- Rails are calculated at 2 per panel (top and bottom).
How the Calculation Works
Panels = total length / panel width (rounded up). Posts = panels + 1. Rails = panels × 2. For privacy fences, each panel typically needs two horizontal rails.
Example
A 120 ft fence with 8 ft panels: 120 / 8 = 15 panels, 16 posts, and 30 rails.
Pro Tips
- Measure the actual perimeter carefully — property lines and lot surveys may differ from estimates.
- Add an extra post for each corner and gate location.
- Set posts in concrete at least 24 inches deep (deeper in cold climates to reach below the frost line).
- Check local building codes and HOA rules before buying materials.
